April 2018 – Real Music. Real Downtown.

Freedom Beat, home to America’s tastes and tunes, has cranked up the volume on its music program, featuring the best local artists for FREE shows open to ALL AGES in Downtown Las Vegas. Check out these three “can’t miss” artists from our April lineup.

1. Elmer Abapo

Elmer Abapo Performing in Downtown Las Vegas
With most artists, you know what you’re going to get. Perhaps it’s their sense of fashion, or maybe it’s just how they present themselves to the world. With R&B and Hip-Hop artist Elmer Abapo, there’s an initial uncertainty with what you’re going to get. Standing at 5’5” with minimalistic style, Elmer goes against contemporary artists with extravagant accessories and a flamboyant fashion sense.

One moment, Elmer will be addressing the audience in a soft-spoken voice, then at the flip of a switch transforms into a dynamic whirlwind of vocal prowess, filling a room with a flood of energy that no audience could anticipate.

Elmer began his musical journey at the young age of 7 when he learned to play the piano. It wasn’t until his teenage years when he fell in love with hip-hop and decided to make his own music. In addition to music, Elmer also continued his education studying architecture at UNLV and even landed a full-time gig at an architecture firm in Vegas. When he got laid off, Elmer saw it as a sign to pursue music full time.

Elmer debuted his first album, Good Intentions, in early 2018. On top of recording, he continues to perform gigs around the valley, making his second appearance at Freedom Beat this month.

See Elmer Abapo live at Freedom Beat:

  • Friday, April 6th 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

2. Dan Fester

Dan Fester Performs in Downtown Vegas

Forget a one-man band; Dan Fester is a one-man dance party. He’s not just about belting out amazing vocals, but Dan is also a live-looping artist using synthesizers, an electronic drum kit, and guitar and vocal manipulation to create a full spectrum sound. Dan has performed over 1,000 shows in his career since starting in the early 2000’s.

In addition to original songs and improv jams, Dan frequently updates his catalog, which now features more than 400 songs that he allows the audience to choose from. The roster of songs ranges from old-school hits from Johnny Cash and the Beatles to his take on modern hits from Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk. Dan Fester is a bit of a musical magician — Neil Young takes on dubstep, and Bob Dylan becomes hip-hop — there’s no limit to his music.

See Dan Fester live at Freedom Beat:

  • Saturday, April 7th 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 21st 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

3. Mahi Crabbe

Mahi Crabbe Performs in Downtown Las Vegas

“You can take the boy off the island, but you can’t take the island out of the boy.” This is 100 percent true when it comes to local talent Mahi Crabbe. Growing up in Hawaii, he played music with a Polynesian dance group.

Fast forward to 2011, Mahi made his grand entrance into the music scene when he released several original songs including “Tell Me You Do” and “Dear Babe” — both of which were featured in the rotation on Las Vegas’ 24-Hour Hawaiian & Island Music Station, Pipeline 2 Paradise. Listeners immediately fell in love with his sound. Because of his growing fan base, Mahi auditioned for American Idol season 11, making it to the top 100.

Following an exciting first year in music, Mahi began performing at numerous venues around Vegas, including Freedom Beat where he is a regular performer.

See Mahi Crabbe live at Freedom Beat:

Double Down in Blackjack at Downtown Grand

Unlike roulette and craps where the games are run by chance, blackjack can be a bit more strategic. At the end of the play, it’s not about the cards you’re dealt, but how you play the hand. And playing blackjack in Downtown Las Vegas is a truly unique experience.

Downtown Vegas Blackjack Tournament

At Downtown Grand, we’re hosting a blackjack tournament for a massive cash prize. But before you start searching for how to make extra money playing blackjack, check out our tips below. Tips for Playing Blackjack in Downtown Las Vegas

Here’s a few quick Do’s and Don’ts of the game:

  • Do split eights and aces.
  • Don’t take insurance. Dealers only get a natural blackjack about 30 percent of the time.
  • Do hit with an 11 or less.
  • Don’t split fives or 10s.
  • Do hit a soft 17.
  • Don’t stay on 12 through 16 if the dealer is showing a 7 or higher.
  • Do always assume the dealer’s hole card is a 10.
  • Don’t get emotional. Emotions are only distractions.

2. Ryan Whyte Maloney

Ryan Whyte Maloney on the Voice

Ryan has had a passion for music since a young age listening to everything ranging from rock and metal to country and R&B. He began learning guitar at the age of 9 and knew then that he would pursue a career in music. After many ups and downs through the formation of his band Indulge in 2001 (which later disbanded in 2009), Ryan spent a lot of time writing and by 2010 recorded a full-length album.

Ryan wanted to push his career to the next level, so he auditioned for NBC’s The Voice. After receiving a four-chair turn-around during the blind audition, Ryan ended up on Team Blake making it to the final five. Since his TV debut, he has continued to flourish in Las Vegas performing local venues including Cabo Wabo Cantina, Fremont St. Experience, and of course, Freedom Beat.
