5 Free Things to Do in Downtown Las Vegas

February 20, 2020

When you’re visiting Vegas on a budget, Downtown Las Vegas is the best place in the city to get the most bang for your buck. Downtown has you covered if you’re tired of paying premium prices and expensive hidden fees on the Strip. To help you out, we’ve put together the most comprehensive list of free things to do in Downtown Las Vegas. Check it out!

1. Enjoy Free Live Music

Downtown Las Vegas has some of the best venues, bars, and restaurants where you can catch free live music any time of day or night, including Freedom Beat and Pizza Rock at Downtown Grand. You’ll have an opportunity to enjoy up-and-coming artists and local favorites without having to purchase expensive tickets or pay an entry fee.

2. Explore the Downtown Las Vegas Street Art Scene

If you didn’t know already, Downtown Las Vegas has undergone a cultural and artistic rebirth in recent years. A lot of that has to do with the Life is Beautiful Music Festival, which Downtown Las Vegas has hosted since it started in 2013. Each year, celebrated street artists have decorated the downtown streets with vibrant murals to complement the popular three-day music festival.

You can check out all the Downtown Las Vegas street art for free by exploring the few blocks where Life is Beautiful is usually held. You’ll find most of these murals just east of the main Fremont Street area between 6th Street and 9th Street from Carson to Ogden Ave. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, be sure to hunt down these downtown murals.

3. Check Out Downtown Container Park

Downtown Container Park Mantis

Downtown Container Park is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours if you need a little break from the flashing lights of the casinos. Container Park is a unique destination made entirely of repurposed shipping containers. Each store, restaurant, bar, and art gallery at Container Park are housed in a recycled, air-conditioned pod!

You can’t miss Downtown Container Park on the corner of Fremont and 7th Streets with the giant praying mantis steel sculpture marking the entrance. You’ll find other fun photo opportunities inside the park, including more sculptures, art, and an epic treehouse and playground for the kids. It’s also the place to go for a more boutique-style shopping experience downtown.

4. See Unique Antiques

Main Street Station, a few blocks from Downtown Grand, has one of the best free collections of antiques that you’ll find in Las Vegas. You can take a self-guided tour to see things like chandeliers from the original Coca-Cola building and Figaro Opera House in Paris, a portion of the Berlin Wall, stained glass from the Lillian Russel Mansion, and the bronze doors and facade from the Royal Bank of Kuwait.

You’ll also find interesting antiques throughout the lobby and casino, including antique slot machines, furniture, wooden accents, and lighting. For the free self-guided tour, you can pick up a detailed brochure at the front desk, so you don’t miss anything while you’re there.

5. The Best People-Watching in the City

Without a doubt, one of the best free things to do in Downtown Las Vegas is the people-watching. You’ll see people of every age and background visiting from all over the world while in Sin City. A great place to sit and watch the crowds is an outdoor table at Triple George Grill on 3rd Street. You’ll see all the action happening across the street in the Downtown Grand casino and an eclectic group of visitors as they bounce from bar to bar.

You’ll also have plenty to look at on Fremont Street, a quick walk across the street from Downtown Grand. Aside from the crowds and bands, you’ll also have the opportunity to check out free street performances that cover everything from singing to body painting.

Just because you’re in Las Vegas doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money to have a good time. There are plenty of free things to do in Downtown Las Vegas without having to sacrifice any fun. Be sure to stop by the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino for more exciting things to do while you’re here!
