Roarin’ Twenties Fashion

Picture this: the year is 1928, you pull up to the party in your new Model T Ford and get out of the car. What are you wearing?

The 1920s is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. Women broke out of what was accepted in society and started wearing what they wanted to wear (short skirts and pants). While most men wore the highly formal attire daily, some began wearing athletic clothing for the first time.

In honor of The Grand Gatsby New Year’s Eve Weekend Celebration, we’re encouraging guests to come dressed in their 1920s best. But don’t worry, we’ll give you some pointers first.

Perhaps the easiest look is the “working class” style. Men of the working class couldn’t afford three-piece suits, so their style was a bit more casual. This style is made up of:

  • Dress Pants
  • Vest or Suspenders
  • Button Down Shirt
  • Oxford Shoes
  • Newsboy Cap

Because New Year’s tends to be a classy event, you may want to up the ante and rock something more “Jay Gatsby” like. This attire includes:

  • 3-piece Tuxedo with Peak Lapel
  • White Pleated Tuxedo Shirt
  • White Pocket Square
  • Cufflinks
  • Bow Tie
  • Black Patent Leather Dress Shoes

Top hat optional

Or fellas can have a little fun and dress in a mobster costume:

  • Pin Striped Suit
  • Overcoat
  • Fedora
  • Saddle Shoes
  • Cane
  • Cigar

The most common look for ladies is the flapper. These were the ladies who got all gussied up to drink and dance to jazz music. This style includes:

  • Beaded or Fringe Dress
  • Long Pearls
  • Feather Boas
  • Feather or Beaded Headband
  • Long Satin Gloves
  • High Heels
  • Long Cigarette Holder

If you don’t want to get too dressed up, instead of Gatsby, ladies can dress more like Downton Abbey.

  • Loose Blouse
  • Pleated Linen Skirt
  • Pearl Necklace
  • Cloche Hat

“Come as a flapper, come as you are, come as a mobster or a silent screen star.”
